Friday Inspiration - Dark Floral Trend

Part of being a stylist is to keep an eye out for emerging fashion/interior trends and although floral prints have been around for a while recently I've noticed a shift from delicate romantic and pastel floral prints to dark and moody designs which I've long been a fan of. I started a Dark Florals Trend Board on Pinterest a while ago where I've been pinning lots of inspirational images which I've come across, like the pics above, so this weeks Friday Inspiration is all about this fabulous dark and handsome trend...

If you follow me on Instagram you would have seen the above pic of my current inspiration wall in my office...just some of my ideas for my upcoming shoots this Autumn / Winter. After a flurry of designers showing the dark side of florals in their A/W shows, I expect to see this trend hitting high street stores soon. I already spotted a few great items at Espirt...
Love this all-over floral pattern sweatshirt and floral print racksack.
Espirt were also stocking a great pair of silky floral trousers with this pretty inky blue floral pattern above in their Summer 14 collection.

Typically fashion trends last a lot longer in our homes than in our wardrobes so if you want to give your home a little trend update don't worry if your not sure how long these dark florals are sticking around... I've got a feeling this pretty moody vibe is here to stay for a good while ... I've already seen a few home ranges sporting this style from M&S, H&M and lets not forget the dark and wonderfully flamboyant designs of House of Hackney!! So how do you translate this trend into your homes?

*You could add a dark floral print wallpaper feature wall and if your not convinced you want to go too dark, how about making a patchwork wall with mix and match wallpapers with a few darker designs thrown in.

*Make diy cushions using dark floral fabrics to adorn your bed or sofa, choose fabrics with black, charcoal, navy or deep mulberry backgrounds and all over floral patterns.

* Mix floral patterns with soft greys, dusky pinks and white to keep the look up to date and not too Gothic.

* Or simply buy some flowers in deep dark tones and arrange in the darkest vase you own.

What do you think of this trend? Have you started spotting dark floral prints everywhere you go I like I have?? Will you be wearing the look this A/W and are you planning to add this trend to your home decor?

Friday Inspiration - VELUX Windows

With house prices at an all time high it's no wonder more and more of us are thinking about building extensions onto our properties, converting loft and basement spaces and building new structures in our gardens. With all these new spaces come new window solutions and recently I've been taking a look at VELUX range of window products. Since buying our house which was built in 1912 I've been thinking more about architecture, we've been busy trying to restore our homes original features, like fireplaces, ceiling moldings and floorboards. Once we have renovated the house our future plans are to build a summer house/ garden room at the bottom of our garden and I've already been searching for ideas and inspirations for it, I've always loved skylight windows as they let in loads of natural light, in many of the gorgeous location houses where I do my shoots they have VELUX Windows installed in the new parts of the properties. The above collage of window pics are a few of my recent fave found via Pinterest - check out my new Selina Lake - Windows & doors Pinterest Board for more of my inspiration. Below are some of the spaces I have styled for my books which had VELUX Windows fitted.

Are you panning to extend your property? Build a garden room or convert a loft space and will you be installing VELUX Windows?

My Office Makeover & new Cato desk from Habitat

If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook you might of seen a few snaps of my new office and it's makeover in process. In our new house we allocated the back bedroom as my new office/studio, I wanted the space to become bright, calm and with a slight Skandi feel - check out some of my inspiration in top pic via my Pinterest. I set to work stripping wallpaper, taking up the tired laminate flooring which reveled original wood floorboards and then I painted everything white! My Husband installed new lighting and put up shelves to house all of my books. I have a large desk where I sit and work on my mac but I wanted a smaller desk to fit into a little nook in the corner of the room where I could have a crafting area. I opted for the Cato desk from Habitat, I love the mix of the lacquered white top with wooden legs which adds the Skandi touch I wanted and the built in shelf is perfect for storing my crafty bits and bobs, I use my vintage Ercol chair with it and have my sewing machine set out on top. It's a great space to sit and sew and to make things for my shoots. The complete makeover will be featured soon in one of the magazines I work for so for now I've just included a little sneak peek - what this space to see the transformation!

My July

My July via Instagram @selinalake - July started with my Handmade & Vintage Summer Fete in Guidlford on the 1st Saturday of the month - you can read about the fete here. I was then invited to do a book signing at Belvoir Elderflower Festival and this marked the last event on my Selina Lake Outdoor Living Book Tour - big thanks again to everyone who came along to all my events this summer, it was great to meet you all. This month I also enjoyed a visit to Mayfield Lavender with my sister. I have spent most of my free time decorating our new house with my husband .. we now have lovely white painted floorboards in our living room and my office. We've also been enjoying picking our own fruit and veg from our vegetable patch in the garden so far we've had a cucumber, french beans, purple beans, runner beans and a yellow courgette! Workwise I'll been busy working on a new project for a new client featuring lots of my favorite things, florals and vintage china and I did another shoot this month where the new mint Victoria Pendelton bike from Halfords was the star of the show! Now roll on Aug as I have a holiday booked and a couple of Christmas shoots to prep for!

Friday Inspiration - Outdoor Living Festival Style

Festival Season is well underway this Summer and here in the UK the weather has been absolutely glorious for weeks now (fingers crossed it continues) it's the perfect weather for Outdoor Living, Festival Style....
In my latest book Selina Lake Outdoor Living I share my styling ideas for Glamping in the Camping in Style Chapter, there's lots of easy makes through-out the book too like this cute Boho Teepee tent and no-sew cushions and I explore the great outdoors in style.

My Top 3 Festival Chic Essentials for creating the look yourself are:-

1. Start collecting Vintage Silk Scarves you can pin/sew together to make an eclectic garden tablecloth, use as a makeshift tent/hideaway or use them to make my no-sew cushions. I find them in charity/ second-hand shops.

2. Explore your inner hippy and have a go at making yourself a Floral Hair Garland - your find my how to in the book. (I made mine above using David Austin Roses)

3. Why not invest in a basket for your bike so you can ride around with it filled with flowers!!!

For More Inspiration .. check out my Festival Style Pinterest Board.

Have you been to/planning to go to any Festivals? planning any Gypsy Style garden parties or gatherings or going glamping this Summer?

Lavender Love

On Friday my sister Aimee Lake & I headed to Mayfield Lavender fields to have a picnic breakfast together. It was my sisters first visit there and she did her hair in a gorgeous festival chic style for the occasion, I'd visited a few times last summer when I was there styling a lavender party for my book Selina Lake Outdoor Living and it was great to be back!
For the Lavender Party in my latest book I commissioned Chloe Bakes Cakes to make a few different cakes which I decorated with fresh lavender and sweetpeas. I dressed the picnic bench table with a diy scalloped tablecloth and decorated chair backs with lavender and wax flower posies:- Check my book for more styling with Lavender ideas!
If you follow me on Pinterest your recognise some of the above images which I've pinned to my Lavender Style inspiration Board or if not go and take a look... Are you a Lavender Fan? Have you visited a Lavender Field this Summer yet? or are you growing your own Lavender?

Belvoir Elderflower Festival - Book Signing

On Sunday 13th July I headed north near Grantham to attend, Belvoir Fruit Farms 1st ever Elderflower Festival and I had a wonderful day. I set up my book & Stationary stall and spent the day in the main Marquee signing copies of my book as part of my Selina Lake Outdoor Living Book tour. I also had a few bric-a-brac items for sale and I was giving out free goodie bags with Thompson & Morgan Wild Flower Seeds, Talking Tables Party Straws, Belvior Fruit Farm drinks and Outdoor Living Cards inside. It was great to meet some of my Midlands Twitter and Instagram followers. The Festival was styled by local Florist Sophie - I loved the floral display in the old bike basket and lace covered hay bale seating. Frances Quinn Winner of The Great British Bake Off was there to judge an Elderflower Cake Competition and some local school kids did a really sweet maypole dance. I bought a punnet of the most delicious locally grown strawberries and enjoyed a glass or two of Belvoir's Elderflower Presse. It was a very lovely day out!

Handmade & Vintage Summer Fete 2014

A couple of weeks ago I hosted my 2nd Handmade & Vintage Summer Fete, this time I choose the Historic Guildhall in Guildford for the venue. The Fete was supported by Mollie Makes, Homes & Antiques, Prima Makes, Belvoir fruit Farm Drinks, Talking Tables and Thompson & Morgan and was part of my Selina Lake Outdoor Living Book Tour. The Fete started at 11am on Sat 5th July and a queue of visitors were eargerly awaiting entry into the pretty venue. The 1st 10 lucky guests through the door received a Prima Makes Goodie Bags. All the stalls inside looked amazing, I had invited lovely creative people from far and wide to come and sell their handmade & vintage wares, some came from Oxford, Leicester, even as far as Yorkshire! I too had set up a book stall where I was signing copies of all of my books and giving out Mollie Makes Goodies bags. It was great to have lots of visitors come along and in over  6 hours we had nearly 800 people visit the fete. I'd like to thank everyone who came along, my event/styling team who helped me run the event, Debbie for helping to spread the word around Guildford, Jacquie & Pippa for running the vintage tea stall, all my lovely stall holders and my event supporters.
Check out Homes & Antiques Blog Post about my Summer Fete

Friday Inspiration via Habitat!

Have you seen Habitat's latest rug collection? I was drawn to this Agnes multi-coloured cotton flat weave rug as the texture and style reminded me of some cushions I used to style some of the living room spaces in my book Bazaar Style. Mixing Pinks & Red with mustard & grey and a dash of orange is a colour theme I explored through-out the book. Above I've put a little colour inspiration board together using some of my recent favorites found on Pinterest, I think this rug would work really well in a space where your looking to achieve an eclectic boho Bazaar Style or to add a shot of colour to a more neutral space - what do you think? Have you used Pink/Red & Mustard together in your home?
